AFS Convention

AFS Convention: Anti-fouling systems for FPSOs (Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading vessels) are specialized coatings or technologies applied to the hull and underwater structures to prevent the accumulation of marine organisms such as algae, barnacles, and mollusks. This accumulation, known as biofouling, can negatively impact the vessel’s performance and efficiency.
Purpose of the Audit
Minimizing the risk of biofouling is essential to maintaining the vessel’s efficiency, stability, and operational performance while also preventing the spread of invasive species and protecting marine ecosystems. Additionally, compliance with anti-fouling regulations helps avoid penalties or detention by port state authorities.
Compliance Assurance
To ensure that the FPSO complies with international standards for marine pollution prevention.
Efficiency Optimization
To minimize the risk of biofouling, which can negatively affect the vessel’s efficiency, stability, and operational performance.
Ecosystem Protection
To prevent the spread of invasive species and protect marine ecosystems.
Regulatory Avoidance
To avoid penalties or detention by port state authorities for non-compliance with anti-fouling regulations.

Verification of System Compliance
The audit ensures that the anti-fouling system in use on the FPSO meets the requirements of the International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-fouling Systems on Ships (AFS Convention). This includes checking that the system does not contain or release prohibited substances like organotin compounds, which are toxic to marine life.
AFS Convention
The certification process for anti-fouling systems for FPSOs is governed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and is often based on the International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-fouling Systems on Ships (AFS Convention), which was adopted in 2001 and entered into force in 2008. This convention aims to protect the marine environment from harmful substances that could be released from anti-fouling paints and coatings.
